CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - The provincial chief executive had recently requested the residents living in the coastal towns to
cooperate with their respective local officials as they implement disaster plan during rainy calamities.
"Kailangan
kapag mayroon warning para lumikas na ang mga tao ay sumunod na. Huwag
ng hintayin na lumalala pa ang sitwasyon tsaka pa lang lilikas. Hindi na
tayo sigurado ngayon sa panahon," Governor Lilia Pineda said.
Pineda declared that the people could no longer
depend on existing flood control facilities as the same already suffered
structural defects on its foundation.
She
is referring to Arnedo Dike and Arayat-Apalit Setback Levee traversing
eight municipalities in the fourth district of the province.
Arnedo Dike,
serving as the first line of defense of Pampanga against flooding, was constructed before World War II.
However,
the Department of Public Works and Highway previously claimed that dike
had already out live its lifespan. According to them, no amount of
engineering intervention could save its remaining sections.
In fact, the
residents who established residential houses are advised to look for other places as the same is no longer safe.
Arayat-Apalit
Setback Levee, on the other hand, serving as the second line of defense
likewise manifested structural defects due leakages in several sections
from different municipalities during the onslaught of typhoon last
year.
The governor, meanwhile
noted she informed by the public works that they are currently fixing
problems on flood control projects in the province.
"Nagtataka lang ako bakit kailan tag ulan tsaka sila gumagawa," she stated.
