The year 2012 has left us a series of real stories from people running the affairs of government whether in the provincial or municipal level with the exception of some individuals from the private and religious sectors.
First in the list of top 10 newsmakers of the year is Governor Lilia “Nanay” Pineda with long parade ‘friendly’ stories dealing with her programs and priority projects that were carried out readily but with big impact on the lives of the Kapampangans .
So far, Pineda’s administration since she assumed office as the provincial chief executive was not tainted with the corruption and irregularities except of course she was linked to her husband who is believed to be an illegal number game operator who is now the favorite target of Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Max Roxas in his alleged anti ‘jueteng’ campaign in the province.
Mayor Jerry Pelayo and former President and now Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (CGMA) are next in the list.
Pelayo, the current Pampanga Mayors’ League president, stood behind other local chief executives in the province particularly those along the stretch of Pampanga River when hundreds of thousands of Kapampangans were displaced due to calamities.
He mobilized all his resources to save the residents submerged to several feet of floodwater. Most of these residents are not even ready for the worst. They were caught unprepared with no means to protect and keep themselves alive.
Pelayo also exposed irregularities involving hundreds of millions worth of sub standard flood mitigating, infrastructure projects in his town.
These include an asphalt overlay of Arayat-Apalit Setback Levee which foundation had been weakened by a seepage from the Pampanga River and revetment project particularly in Barangay Mandasig, Candaba town .
CGMA has been one of the favorites of President Benigno Aquino III probably next to disgraced former Chief Justice Renato Corona.
The stories on cases filed against the former president are hot items not only here in Pampanga but also in national newspapers.
Others who are also included in the list of top 10 newsmakers were Sto. Tomas Mayor Joselito Naguit (alleged irregularities on disbursement of municipal funds), Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan (alleged hiring of so much job orders),Representative Carmelo Lazatin (sudden shift of political plan), City of San Fernando Mayor Oscar Rodrigues (the quest to put an end on Dong’s ruling in the 3rd district), former Huk Supremo Emmanuel Alejandrino (known for his charity works but recently arrested for possession of fire arms and subsequently posted bail. He is now running as Mayor in Arayat town), Archbishop Paciano Aniceto (living the saintly life) and former Sto. Tomas municipal administrator Rodel Garcia (whistle blower on Mayor Naguit’s alleged commission of irregularities.
