- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) yesterday
expressed concern about the "kuto" problem of the farmer-fishermen here
In a text message received by Sun Star Pampanga from BFAR official, it was said that they are willing to assist the affected fishermen.
Aside from this, it was also disclosed that BFAR regional office is now setting a schedule to visit the concerned stakeholders for possible assistance.
It can be recalled earlier, several fishermen noted that there is an emerging threat to the fishing industry in Masantol with growing concern on a new predator, better known to the locality as "Kuto."
"Kuto" eats fingerlings in the Pampanga River and other controlled fishponds.
In fact, the fishermen stated that it is now hurting the fishing industry in the locality.
Reports have it that BFAR begun various projects that will revive marine life in the Manila Bay area including that of the Pampanga River.
BFAR Regional Director Remedios Ongtangco previously disclosed, “Around 1,351,300 propagules had been planted in 14 mangrove reforestation areas in towns of Masantol, Sasmuan, Lubao, Minalin and in other adjacent municipalities in Bulacan and Bataan.
