CANDABA
- A group of local bird hunters here who requested not to be identified
urged incoming Mayor Rene Maglanque to revisit the resolutions
previously passed by the Sangguniang Bayan declaring Candaba as a
Fresh Water Aquaculture Resource and Fish Sanctuary Zone for the purpose
of protecting and preserving its flora and fauna followed by another
resolution declaring Candaba Swamp as bird sanctuary.
The initiative intends to protect both local and migratory birds, among them are "dumara" wild duck, "tagak", "wis", "kandungango" and kingfisher.
The resolutions hunting and poaching of birds particularly at the Candaba Swamp are declared illegal acts.
This according to them resulted to ecological imbalance.
"Dumami ang population ng mga local birds natin subalit nagiging banta naman sila sa sector ng agrikultura," one of the local bird hunters said.
They claimed that farmers working near the Wildlife Reserve Park in Sitio Dona Simang, Visal San Pablo are complaining about the birds eating their palay and other valuable crops.
Instead, this group suggested to relax the concerned resolutions to allow free hunting of birds in some areas in town at a given period of time to be determined by the municipality.
They also urged officials to make a study involving the effects on farming of the continuing growing number of the local and migratory birds staying in the bird sanctuary here.
Candaba is among the preferred migration sites of many bird species that come from as far as China.
Migratory birds usually occupy the 300-hectare area of the swamp, which is covered with shallow water, small islands, and floating vegetation.
