PGENRO chief plans to convene waste management board

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - The Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (PGENRO) chief yesterday bared that they are set to convene the solid waste management board next month.

This statement was made by PGENRO head Engr. Arthur Punsalan in a radio program hosted by Lubao Councilor John Susi.

He said that the initiative is aimed at addressing the looming garbage problem in the province.

"Lahat ay may obligasyon pagdating sa basura," Punsalan noted.

The campaign on this matter started  few months after Governor Lilia Pineda assumed office on her first term wherein she instructed Punsalan to map out all illegal and controlled dump sites in various municipalities.

Pineda also pushed for the establishment of clustered material recovery facilities to minimize the volume of garbage produced.

It can also be noted that the provincial government also distributed brand new dump trucks to all the municipalities intended for hauling of garbage.

Too much garbage dumped on rivers, tributaries and major waterways had been partly blamed on  massive flooding experience last year.

Punsalan stated that for garbage disposal alone, the provincial government is spending more than P450-million a year.

He stressed garbage management in the locality is one of the obligations of the concerned local government unit.

However, the PGENRO chief claimed that in most cases,  it is the provincial government who assumed the obligation knowing the municipalities had limited resources to address the same.
