Traders: campaign boosts market transactions

STA. ANA - Ordinary  traders here yesterday  noted an  increased of market transactions by the residents since the local campaign period   formally started.

"Lumakas ang palengke natin dito mula ng magsimulang mangampanya ang ating mga kandidato. Siguro dahil maraming tao ang nagkaroon ng trabaho sa kampanya kung kaya't gumanda din ang benta  natin ngayon," Connie Alfonzo, a vendor here said.

She explained that the number  market goers compared to the previous months has been remarkably doubled and this has resulted to more sales and additional income on their part.

"Karaniwan naman yan tuwing malapit ang election tumataas ang kita ng mga nasa palengke dahil mayroon pambili ang mga tao," Alfonzo added.

It was learned that local candidates not only in this town are establishing networks from the barangay level by hiring coordinators who in turn are tasked to recruit leaders in their respective localities.

These coordinators, in exchange to their services rendered are receiving regular allowances from the candidates,  same with other political leaders.

They will be responsible for every aspect of the campaign that is not covered by the candidate or volunteers

Local campaigning adds up on traffic problem

STA. ANA - An intense street campaign efforts by the local candidates here further worsened the traffic situation along the corner of the public market and parish church in the town proper.

According to the residents, traffic problem is already existing even before the start of the local campaign period and it is only during rush hour wherein employees  in major establishments in the neighboring places are rushing to report for work.

This came as the concerned local government officials allegedly failed to address the problem despite the growing clamor from the residents and motorists to ease up the traffic condition.

"Mukha di kasama sa concern nila ang tungkol sa traffic. Pinababayaan lamang ito ng mga taga munisipyo. May pagkakataon pa nga mismo si mayor ang nagsabi na di baleng may traffic basta may kabuhayan lang  ang mga tao. Eh pwedi namang pagsabayin ang dalawa," Jayson Pangan, a resident here told Sun Star Pampanga.

However, they noted that traffic in town starts early morning and ends late in the evening. "Wala ng oras ang traffic di tulad ng dati tuwing rush our lamang," another resident here stated.

Another factors that contribute to the problem are the existence of tricycle terminals along the stretch of national road here,  proliferation of side walks including ambulant vendors,  allowing fish dealers to unload at the side of the public market and accommodating private vehicles to park on the shoulder of the road.

"Naintindihan naman natin na talagang masikip ang space natin sa bayan pero kung seseryosohin lang nila ang pagpapatupad ng batas sa kalsada ay mababawasan kahit papaano ang problema natin sa trapiko," Pangan added.

Earlier, the local government here through Mayor Rommel Concepcion with the help of incumbent Congressman Aurelio Gonzales constructed an over hang in the ground floor of the public market to accommodate side walk vendors.

"Wala namang nangyari lalu lang dumami ang mga nagtitinda sa labas ng palengke," he stressed.

This over hang project was funded by Gonzales using his priority development funds amounting to at least P8- million according to one of the employees of the municipal government.

Ex-mayor calls Naguit "media propaganda" desperate move

STO. TOMAS - Former Mayor Romeo “Ninong” Ronquillo has branded the alleged "media propaganda" of incumbent Mayor Joselito Naguit as desperate move and only designed to discredit him as the local elections get even closer.

Naguit during media interview insinuated that the Ronquillos from this town, who happened to be his political opponents had something to do with the burning of his Ningnangan Restaurant in Pulilan Bulacan.

Recovered from the site were lighter and container believed to be used in the commission of arson.

The mayor said no other people would have interest on putting him down except his political nemesis.

With this, Ronquillo in an interview vehemently denied the accusation.

"Kalokohan yan. Wala na lamang siguro siyang alam sabihin kung kaya't isinasangkot niya ako sa sinasabi niyang insidente sa restaurant niya," he told Sun Star Pampanga,

More so, Ronquillo noted that as per his information,  the said Ningnangan in Pulilan owned by Naguit is still operating.

"Paanong nasunog iyon eh business as usual sila. Baka ang sinasabi nilang nasunog ay iyong kusina ng restaurant," Ronquillo ended.

Bets agreed on urgency of river rehab

APALIT - Four candidates for the Provincial Board representing 4th district of the province had unanimously agreed on the urgency of the need to rehabilitate Pampanga River.

Despite differences on various political views, incumbent Board Member Nestor Tolentino, former Board Member Nelson Calara, Councilor Kenneth Nunag and Cecile Villegas stand in common ground when ask about their agenda on Pampanga River.

Tolentino said he used to be the supervising engineer of the defunct Pampanga River Control System (PRCS) which is tasked to monitor, preserve, maintain, and develop the said river.

However, he added that with the abolishment of PRCS long before, the river has been abused by the people in the communities along its stretch.

"Ang kailangan po talaga ay i-revive natin ang Pampanga River Control System upang mabantayan po nating mabuti ang ating kailugan," he stated.

Tolentino also explained that currently there is enough legislation both in national and local level involving protection and conservation of major waterways.

"What we are lacking is the strict implementation of the laws," he noted.

Calara, for his part,  claimed the condition of the river is hurting the livelihood of the people.

"Diyan sa bandang Masantol at Macabebe may mga kuto na gumain ng maliliit na lamang isda at ibang pang pinagkakakitaan ng ating mga mangingisda. Kailangan natin bigyan ng solusyon ito," he said.

Nunag, on the other hand, explained that solving the problem of Pampanga River is not the sole obligation of the concerned local government unit.

He said the people likewise are obligated to protect the river.

"Ang kailangan natin ay magtulungan upang mai-save natin ang ilog," Nunag lamented.

Villegas stressed that the people living near the river need proper education on environmental protection so that they help solve the problem on pollution, garbage, illegal fishing among others.

Fishermen ask for establishment of regulatory board

SAN SIMON - A group of fishermen here yesterday urged the provincial government to consider establishing Pampanga River Regulatory Board (PRRB).

Nestor Macapagal, a local leader of the fishermen said that PRRB  if establish will be a big help in bringing back the old glory by taking initiative  to  rehabilitate the river.

He suggested that the same will be tasked to monitor all human activities within the Pampanga River as well those people living in the nearby communities.

Macapagal explained that people in the various municipalities in the 4th district including Candaba, San Luis, San Simon, Apalit, Macabebe, Masantal and Minalin are dependent on the river for their livelihood.

"Marami po sa ating mga kababayan ang mangingisda at umaasa lamang sa ating kailugan kaya sana i-konsidera din nila ang paglikha ng Pampanga River Regulatory Board para ma monitor na mabuti ang ating ilog. Kung mayroon gumagamit ng chemical, kuryente at iba pa sa pangingisda ay sila na mismo ang magbabawal nito," he stated.

Reports have it, the biggest and longest dump site in Pampanga if not in whole Central Luzon is the Pampanga River wherein the families living  along the stretch of the river are dumping their domestic waste on it.

These fishermen claimed that to much garbage in the river is now affecting source of livelihood.

"Konti na lang ang nakukuhang isda mula sa ilog. Hindi na tulad ng dati basta lumusong  sa Pampanga River pag uwi mo mayroon ng ititinda ang mga asawa at mayroon pang matitirang pagulam para sa pamilya," another fisherman stated.

Bets supporters debate triggers heated argument

CANDABA - The political debate of the supporters of two mayoralty candidates here  had turned into a  heated argument as  they accidentally met in Barangay Gulap  the other night.

This came as supporters mayoralty bets Reynaldo "Busog" Sagum and Danilo "Boy" Baylon have disagreement on the political situation and  real score of the two based on surveys conducted by different groups.

"Muntik nang magpang abot ang mga tagasuporta ni Busog at Baylon dahil lang sa usapang pulitika. Mayroon pang tagaritong nagsabi na naglabas pa ng baril ang mga ito habang nagtatalo. Buti na lang naawat sila ng mga matatanda," a resident from Barangay Gulap, who requested not to be named  told Sun Star Pampanga.

Earlier surveys show that Baylon is leading leaving Sagum far fourth. However, as the elections get closer, some are claiming that Sagum has over taken Baylon.

Baylon's supporters did not like this that's why they got angry with Sagum's supporters.

As this developed, concerned citizens here told them to remain cool and let the political season pass by peacefully. They said, whoever wins they still need to work to support their respective family.

"Huwag idaan sa init ng ulo ang election. Hayaan na lang natin na ang taong bayan ang humusga sa huli. Pagkatapos naman nito magtatrabaho pa rin ang lahat para sa kanilang mga pamilya," Andres Salcedo, a resident here stated.

The mayoralty race in this town is a four cornered fight which include Patrick Gerard "Kuya Pat" Pelayo, Rene Maglanque, Baylon and Sagum.

"Kuya Pat" gets youth support on mayoralty bid

CANDABA - The mayoralty bid of Patrick Gerard "Kuya Pat"  Pelayo, son of incumbent Mayor Jerry has been bolstered with the increasing support coming from the youth sector in town.

This came as the regular  house to house campaign by the younger Pelayo in various barangays turned like 'people power' when the youth surprisingly came out to join him in campaigning and soliciting support from the local folks.

This sector is playing a big role in Pelayo's campaign.

In fact, aside from joining him in his sorties, they are also maximizing the use of technology and other social media to convince their friends and relatives to rally behind the cause of Pelayo.

"Mga frends n relatives ko dyan sa bahay pare at buong candaba, wag n po taung mag alinlangan, vote straight po tau team kuya pat na,mahal ntin ang ating pamilya kya sa knila lng ntin maipagkakatiwala ang ating mga mahal sa buhay, kuya pat n kuya jerry, saludo kmi senyu!," Dennis Danan,  a resident here shouted in his Facebook account.

Do not rely on survey - political observers

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - A group of political observers here advised the voters not to give much weight on survey results as the same were only commissioned to serve the interest of a particular candidate.

They said local survey results when publicized to some extent influence the public's voting preference.

"Marami pa hangga ngayon ang nakikiramdan lang muna sila kung sino ang malakas at kung sino ang mahina kaya kapag nabalitaan nila na nangunguna sa survey ang isang kandidato posibling ma-impluwensiyahan ang boto nila," Honorato Capili, a retired public school teacher and political observer said.

Capili explained that survey results do not reflect the real choice of the people with the limited respondents asked during the process.

He also added that in some instances questionnaires are tailored to favor a candidate or political party commissioning the survey.

"Halimbawa  iyong Angeles City ang laki ng voting population tapos ang tatanungin mo ay apat na daan lamang na tao?  Pagkatapos gagawa sila ng konklusyon na malakas ang isang kandidato. Dapat malaman din natin paano nila isinagawa ang survey, paano sila kumuha respondents at sapat na ba ang bilang ng mga respondents to represent the general sentiment of the electorates," one of the political observers but asked  not to be named pointed out.

As this developed, these political observers told the voters to decide based on credentials, capability, attitude and track records rather than relying on the surveys.

Election is pay back for Guv - Patients

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - Indigent Kapampangans who benefited on the Integrated Medical Assistance (IMA) program of Governor Lilia Pineda regarded the upcoming elections as a pay back time.

"Sa dami ng ginawang maganda sa amin ni Nanay gaya na lamang ng  pagpapahospital sa aming mga mahal sa buhay kung minsan pa nga halos wala na kaming dapat na bayaran pa dahil sinagot na niyang lahat ay hindi namin siya kakalimutan ngayon na siya naman ang nangangailangan ng aming suporta," Imelda Gotiangco, a resident from Barangay San Isidro, San Simon town said.

Gotiangco stressed that Pineda will continuously enjoy the overwhelming support of the people in the province as she fully devoted her first term serving the interest of the Kampangan in terms of health programs.

"Kahit gaano pa kamahal ang operasyon at laboratory test ay hindi nagdadalawang isip si Governor Pineda na tumulong. Kaya tumatanaw lamang kami ng malaking utang na loob sa kanya," another patient from San Simon told Sun Star Pampanga.

Gener Paviola, a dialysis patient stated he along with his family will vote for Governor Pineda and son Dennis as both are already tested in public service.

"Iboboto po namin silang pareho. Kasangkapan po sila kung kaya't patuloy na humahaba ang buhay ko," he noted.

Pineda after assuming the capitol's highest post initiated the formation of a team of medical experts which is composed of surgeons, specialists in urology, oncology, neurology and  pulmonology to provide the immediate health needs of the Kapampangan.

Under IMA program, the governor has provided the people in Pampanga free access to medical experts in public hospitals.

She also pushed for the upgrading and renovation of all district hospitals in the province to make sure that the Kapampangan will be given equal oppurtunity on public health programs.

Likewise,  Pineda earlier launched “Nars ni Nanay Program” which led to the hiring of some 200 nurses to augment the health services in Pampanga’s municipalities.

This program is designed to mobilize the registered nurses.  The competencies that will be gained by the nurses upon completion of the program will include both health and special foucs on curative and preventive measures.

They were also tasked to detect tuberculosis patients in all the barangays of the province.

Candidates double campaign efforts as election gets closer

SAN LUIS - Local candidates running to different positions had doubled their campaign efforts to reach out voters with only 21 days remaining before May 13 elections.

These candidates particularly in 4th district  municipalities are currently rushing their campaign as they solicit the support of the local folks in various village.

"Kanya kanya sila sila gimmick. Pagandahan ng campaign jingle at padamihan ng posters sa pader. Ang siste pa lahat sila maka-Dios, makatao at makamahirap. At sigurado ko lahat ngayon ay kinakabahan sa dami rin ng kanilang ginastos sa kanilang kandidatura," Greg Basa, a resident here said.

Basa noted that candidates are engaging to a lot of campaign promises thinking that the people would favor  them during elections if they will such thing.

"Akala nila nila basta na lang hindi nag-iisip kaming mga botante at basta na lamang maniniwala sa kanila," he stated.

In Candaba town, four mayoralty wannabes are campaigning on a house to house basis on  at least two barangays a day with their respective show boat going over the localities in this town.

This  includes Patrick Gerald Pelayo, Rene Maglanque, Danilo Baylon and Reynaldo Sagum. All are hoping to be elected as mayor replacing out going Mayor  Jerry Pelayo who is now eyeing the congressional seat in the 4th district.

In Sto. Tomas town, incumbent Mayor Lito Naguit  is now facing former Mayor Romeo Ronquillo who earlier vowed  to unseat the former by preventing him getting his 3rd and last term.

San Simon Mayor Leonora Capule-Wong was again challenged by Manuel Bondoc whom she defeated last 2010 elections with narrow votes.

Meanwhile, running unopposed were Apalit Mayor Jun Tetangco and Macabebe Mayor Annette Flores-Balgan.

PNP-AFP action centers activated

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - An official from the Pampanga Police Provincial Office the other day disclosed that they had already activated PNP-AFP action centers (PAACs) established within the  territorial boundaries of the province.

“The PNP and AFP check points are put up for the apprehension of those who violate the gun ban and seize illegal firearms, inspect suspicious individuals and vehicles to avoid violence especially election-related incidents,”Pagkalinawan stated.

The Regional Special Operations Task Force (RSOTG) is likewise conducting   regular checkpoints in various municipalities in support to the municipal police personnel to prevent lawless and private armed groups from interfering with the holding of 2013 midterm elections.

The police likewise intensified the campaign against unlicensed firearms following the launching of ‘Katok’ Operation on December last year.

This resulted to confiscation and voluntary surrender of firearms by the gun holders whose  supporting papers are expired or application for registration is still pending.

The operation is also aimed at encouraging gun holders to renew firearms licenses and to turn-in firearms to police station if no longer interested to renew the same.
