Gov, PML to deliver 500 coffins in typhoon-affected areas in Mindanao

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO --- Governor Lilia G. Pineda has asked the Pampanga Mayors’ League (PML) to help in the preparation of at least 500 coffins for delivery in the typhoon affected province in Mindanao particularly in Davao Region where close to 325 persons were reportedly killed mostly in flash floods and mudslides incidents at the height of tropical storm “Pablo” (international codename: Bopha).

The governor particularly asked assistance of the local manufacturers in Sto Tomas town to prepare at least 500 coffins to help the families of the typhoon victims.

Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo disclosed that the caskets costs from 2,000 to P3,000 each are now being prepared for shipping in Mindanao through the assistance of the Office of Civil Defense.

Pelayo said, upon instruction of Governor Pineda, the mayors league in Pampanga immediately coordinated with the concerned government agencies and local manufacturers in Sto. Tomas town to facilitate the initial delivery of coffins in Mindanao.

Pelayo disclosed that Governor Pineda vowed to  shoulder the payment for the caskets through the provincial government.

This came as Pineda and the mayors learned from the reports coming from the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) that tropical storm Pablo has left at least 325 dead and hundreds more injured and missing as of yesterday.

Reports have it that at least 298 fatalities were recorded, mostly from the provinces of Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley where flash flood and mudslide incidents were reported.

The NDRRMC reported that most of the dead victims in said provinces are still unidentified as of now .

Accordning to NDRRMC, as of yesterday, at least 411 people are injured while 379 remain missing.  About 343 of the missing persons are from New Bataan town, Compostela Valley.

Typhoon Pablo, the 16th storm to enter the country is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility Friday.(By Joel Mapiles / Pampanga Provincial Officer)
