Aids cases in Pampanga increasing - DOH

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - Executives from the Department of Health (DOH) recently warned the provincial officials about the increasing cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) - Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome  (AIDS)  in the province.

Dr. Juanito Taleon, National Center for Health Facilities Development director told the provincial health workers  that aside from tuberculosis there is also a need to seriously look into HIV-AIDS as an emerging health problem to some developing provinces. 

Taleon claimed that  there were recorded incidents of HIV-AIDS in Pampanga including Angeles City. 
"Dito sa Pampanga kailangan ding bigyan ng pansin ang problema sa AIDS na problema din sa Cebu at iba pang probinsiya sa bansa," he said.

However, Taleon did not give figures as to actual number indivuals who were afflicted with HIV-AIDS in Pampanga. 

Based on the  Philippine HIV and AIDS Registry, there are 380 new HIV cases in the country for January 2013 alone with 307 cases coming from the males-having-sex-with males (MSM), accounting for 82 percent.

From 1984 to 2010, there were 840 AIDS cases reported 71% (595) were males. Thirty eight (315) had already died. 

Sexual contact was the most common mode of HIV transmission, accounting for 93% (780) of all AIDS cases. 

More than half (444) of sexual transmission was through heterosexual contact followed by homosexual contact (263) then bisexual contact (73). 

Other modes oftransmission include: mother-to-child transmission (17), blood transfusion (10), injecting drug use (4) and needle prick injuries (2). 

Three percent (27) of the AIDS cases did not report mode of HIV transmission.
