CANDABA - The Environmental Science for Social Change (ESSC) led a three-day training on "OpenStreetMap" (OSM) in this town.
The initiative is aimed at assisting the local government unit on disaster risk reduction training on participatory mapping within the locality.
ESSC is a Jesuit research organization in the Philippines that promotes environmental sustainability and social justice through the integration of scientific methodologies and social processes.
Its mission is to contribute to a critical and holistic understanding of the dynamic relationship between biophysical and social processes in collaboration with partners for the appropriate management of the environment for human development.
Emmanuel Sambale, ESSC geomatics associate explained that OSM is a collaborative project to create a free editable map of the world.
He said initial map data were originally collected from scratch by volunteers performing systematic ground surveys using a handheld GPS unit and a notebook, digital camera, or a voice recorder.
These data were then entered into the OpenStreetMap database.
The training was attended by the municipal employees representing various department.
