Mayors target P2-M for Zapanta’s blood money

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The Pampanga Mayors’ League (PML) yesterday targeted at least P2 million as contribution to the “blood money” to help Joselito Zapanta who is now scheduled to be beheaded in Saudi Arabia.

PML President and Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo said that mayors in various municipalities in the province  are supporting the initiative of Governor Lilia Pineda to raise funds in order to save  Zapanta from impending death.

Zapanta who is a native of Bacolor town was sentenced to death after killing his Sudanese landlord in 2009.

However, it was learned that under Saudi law the family can demand death or set a blood money to compensate for the loss of a relative.

Pelayo added that the mayors had the free will to decide on their individual contributions as response to the call of Pineda to spare the life of a fellow kapampangan.

Apalit Mayor Jun Tetangco, meanwhile, suggested that other municipal employees in various local government units who also manifested sympathy to Zapanta and his family may also contribute.
He said that the fund raising activity is open to every employee in the municipal governments in Pampanga.
Other sectors are likewise encouraged to stand behind Zapanta by giving portion of their earnings to form part of the blood money.
Earlier, Pineda visited the house of Zapanta’s father, Jesus, at Purok 4, Barangay Cabetican Bacolor town.

As  this developed, she assured Jomar, 8 and Maria, 7, Zapanta’s children of scholarship grant  as part of the capitol’s  assistance.

Initially, the provincial government pledged P3 million for Zapanta’s blood money  but the Commission on Audit (CoA) ruled that the same was not allowed under the law.
