CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - The Executive Regional Director of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Central Luzon yesterday bared that the budget for the region has been slashed by at least P220-million.
Andrew Villacorta, DA executive regional director said that the deducted budget will be taken against the farm mechanization program previously implemented at the beginning of the President Benigno Aquino III's administration.
He said that the budget of the regional office is at least P1.5-billion.
"Ang instruction sa amin sa itaas ay i-fine tune ang pondo sa ating mga priority projects," Villacorta added.
The director stated that many district legislators had stood against the initiative, but still the budget was cut and instead given to the identified poorest provinces in the country.
Villacorta noted that the direction is to help these poor provinces boost their agricultural sector for the benefit of the residents.
However, he clarified that there is enough supply of rice and recent development in budgetary aspect would not affect the food requirement of the residents.
"Ang per capita consumption natin ay 190 kilos kada tao, at ang recent ngayon ay 140 kilos lamang. Yung kakainin ng ating mga mamamayan inani na natin, kaya wala tayong problema sa supply," Villacorta explained.
In a related story, he shared that in 2010, the government imported some 2.4-million metric tons of rice from the neighboring countries far from the current 187-thousand metric tons of the current administration.
This according to him would attest to the fact on the success of the rice sufficiency program of President Aquino.
