Continuous dumping of garbage to river noted

APALIT - Despite the impending danger on massive flooding this rainy season, the residents in the nearby communities are continuously dumping domestic garbage near the embankment of Pampanga River.

According to some concerned residents, the people failed to learn lesson from the past.

"The river is heavily  silted due to mud formation and garbage settled under the river," Thomas Jarmin, a resident here stated.

He said the residents along Pampanga River need to be properly educated by their respective municipal governments about the adverse effects of irresponsible dumping of garbage to the environment.

"Malaki ang ginagastos sa dredging pero wala ring nangyayari kasi tuloy tuloy pa rin kasi ang pagtatapon ng basura sa ilog," Jarmin noted.

This holds true in towns of Candaba, San Simo, San Luis and other coastal areas.

Accordingly, the lack of concern and initiative to implement the solid waste management law on the part of the barangay officials has also been noted.

"Kailangan sila ang unang unang nagpapatupad ng batas laban sa pagtatapon ng basura sa ilog dahil sila ang higit na may kakayahayang bantayan ang kanilang nasasakupan," another residents here stated.

It can be noted that Governor Lilia Pineda had expressed alarm over the growing problem of garbage after local government  units failed to comply with the implementation of solid waste management act.

Under the law, the disposal  of solid waste is among the obligations of the municipal governments under the stewardship of the local chief executives.
