CITY OF SAN
FERNANDO – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)
recently noted that the province of Pampanga is among the active provinces in Central Luzon in so far as the implementation of Special Program for the Employment of Students
(SPES).
“Sometimes, it is not easy to encourage other
LGUs to boost their SPES because of budget issues. In Pampanga, the provincial
government is willing to shell out more to increase their beneficiaries,” Arlene
Tolentino, DOLE field officer in Pampanga said.
SPES is mandated under Republic Act No. 9547 intended
to help poor but deserving students to pursue their education by encouraging
their employment during summer.
This is a joint project of public employment
service office (PESO) and DOLE which is aimed at helping the indigent students
in the payment of enrollment fees and purchase of school supplies.
It
was learned that provincial government allocated an amount of P7.5 million
while the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) gave P5-million this year.
Currently, the program has total budget of P12.5- million for the
employment of students.
Luningning Vergara, PESO manager said the
approved budget is equivalent to 60 percent of their total salary while the
other 40 percent is subsidized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
The student-beneficiaries were asked to work
for 20 days under the supervision of PESO receiving minimum wage of P309.50 per
day each.
They were
tasked to conduct surveys and other field works related to employment status in
the province.
