CITY OF SAN FERNANDO –
The provincial chief executive yesterday urged the municipal mayors to
intensify campaign on solid waste management.
Governor Lilia Pineda
recently admitted that she is not satisfied with the performance of various
local government units in so far as resolving the garbage problem is concerned.
She said it is about
time to take a bold step to address the looming concern on volume of garbage
produced by all the municipalities which is now considered as “silent monster”
poising threat to Kapampangans particularly during rainy season.
Pineda during her first
term through the provincial government distributed garbage trucks to various municipalities
to further bolster her position on waste management.
She likewise pushed for
the establishment of clustered material recovery facilities to segregate
recyclable materials and lessen the volume of garbage being produced in the
locality.
The governor meanwhile
stressed that the problem cannot be solved in the municipal level alone as the
same required the participation of all the stakeholders.
As this developed,
Pineda asked support from the national government which according to her has
enough resources to facilitate the establishment of sanitary landfill.
She also stressed that
there is a need to amend the existing law on solid waste management to
strengthen the capability of Environmental Management Bureau of the Department
of Environment and Natural Resources which is now tasked to monitor compliance
on the said law by the LGUs.
