Maglanque vows to protect wild life; hunting of birds in Candaba still illegal

CANDABA - Mayor Rene Maglanque yesterday stressed that the municipal government will always advocate for the strict implementation of the laws and ordinances involving wild life protection and conservation.

This statement was made by Maglanque following the report that bird hunters from the San Rafael and San Miguel towns in Bulacan were allegedly slaughtering local birds in the sanctuary.

"Inutusan na natin ang kapulisan na i-verify ang report tungkol sa pagpatay sa ating mga ibon. Sakaling mapatunayan natin na totoo nga ay ipinahuhuli natin ang mga gumagawa nito," he said.

Albert Manalili, a resident from Barangay Paligue bared that hunting of birds become rampant in areas near the birds sanctuary.

He noted that the illegal hunting of birds started when former Mayor Jerry Pelayo formally left of the municipal government.

Manalili claimed that probably bird hunters are thinking that the administration of Maglanque is no longer interested in protecting the local birds.

It can be recalled that during the time of Pelayo, the Sangguniang Bayan by virtue of a resolution declared the town of Candaba  as a Fresh Water Aquaculture Resource and Fish Sanctuary Zone for the purpose of protecting, preserving its flora and fauna.

Also another resolution was passed  declaring Candaba Swamp as bird sanctuary.

The initiative intends to protect both local and migratory birds, among them  are "dumara" wild duck, "tagak", "wis", "kandungango" and  kingfisher.

The resolutions made  hunting and poaching of birds illegal particularly at the Candaba Swamp.
