Thus said by Mayor Edgar Flores
yesterday during the ocular inspection on the on-going rehabilitation of Gugu
dike in the nearby communities.
He stated that aside from
strengthening Gugu Dike's foundation there is also a need to desilt a portion of
the river going to San Francisco in order to protect thousands of residents in
at least six adjacent barangays .
“We are at the mercy nature,”
Flores noted.
With this, he requested officials
of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) working on the site to consider
his proposal while there is no heavy downpour.
Flores explained that at the height
typhoon season, greater volume of water
coming from Gugu Dike is channeled to San Francisco River
instead to its original course in Sta. Ursula.
“Twenty percent ng volume ng
water yung napupunta sa San Francisco at eighty percent naman sa Sta. Ursula,”
he stated.
Engr. Lucito Sibug, DPWH
construction division chief, meanwhile claimed that they are doing everything
to ensure worthiness of the stretch of Gugu
Dike undergoing rehabilitation.
Sibug stated the rehabilitation of the Gugu Dike is
95 percent completed.
“Ang nagawa nating slope
protection ng dike ay umabot na sa 1.6 kilometer mula sa orginal na planong 1.2
kilometer. Ito po ay ginawa natin by administration,” he added.
Sibug stressed that some
P34-million had been spent by the public works for the said project.
He also agreed to help in the
desilting proposal of Mayor Flores by allowing the use of available equipment
by the public works in the area.
Board Member Ricardo Yabut, on
the other hand, also committed to provide another heavy equipment to
facilitate an expeditious desilting activity.
