MINALIN – The rampaging
floodwater carrying volcanic materials coming from the Gugu River is now threatening
the fishing industry in this town.
This was confirmed by
Mayor Edgar Flores yesterday in an interview saying they are still in critical
condition taking into consideration the volume of water flowing toward Minalin.
“Definitely apektado ang
fishing industry natin dahil bukod sa lahar may silt din yung tubig na
pumapasok sa atin,” he said.
The mayor explained that the rampaging
floodwater is coming from Gugu River – a known catchment of volcanic materials accumulated when Mt.
Pinatubo erupted in 1991.
Fishing is one of the
main industries in the locality.
“We are the number one
tilapia producer in Pampanga,” Flores explained.
Flores noted that the
section of the tail dike near Minalin Poultry and Livestock Cooperative was
breached with remarkable length consisting of 50 meters.
This serves as
the entry of the floodwater containing sediments going to several hectares of
the fishponds.
