CANDABA
- Some eight families in Barangay Vizal Sto. Nino here had recently
lost their houses after the wall of the Maasim Dike failed to contain
the strong current of water at the height of Typhoon Labuyo.
Oleva
Manalastas, 84, displaced resident narrated that the water in Maasim
River started to build up beyond its alert level which immediately
causes alarm over the people living in the locality.
"Nakikita
na namin na mabilis ang dating ng tubig at malapit ng umapaw ang ilog .
Noong una ay sinusubukan pa naming gawan ng paraan pero wala na kaming
magawa kaya lumipat na muna kami sa mataas na lugar," she said.
Severino
Manalastas, also an affected resident stated that at about eight in the
evening last Monday big volume of water filled the river and has
weakened the foundation of the dike.
"Lumambot
ang pundasyun at bumagsak ang isang bahagi nito. Iyong nakatambak na
sand bags sa gilid tinangay din ng rumaragasang tubig. Lahat ng
tinamaang bahay wala itinira, wasak lahat," he said.
Edgar
Anicete, town's municipal engineer explained that the biggest damage
left by Typhoon Labuyo was the breached of Maasim Dike in three major
sections in the Vizal Sto. Nino, Vizal Sto. Cristo and Pulung Gubat.
"Approximately ten meters yung bahagi ng
dike na bumagsak sa Vizal Sto. Nino, five sa Sto. Cristo at from ten to twelve meters naman sa Vizal San Pablo," Anicete noted.
A
day before the typhoon bombarded the province, Mayor Rene Maglanque
created Task Force Labuyo for the round-the-clock monitoring of all
communities particularly those near the river banks.
Also
it is intended to provide immediate assistance to the residents should the need arises.
Task
Force Labuyo was headed by Mayor Maglanque together with the members of
municipal disaster risks reduction management council, local police and
other volunteers.
