Community health workers to receive allowance

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO  – Some 2,600 registered community health workers in the province of Pampanga are expected to receive monthly allowance amounting to at least P500 half of which will come from the provincial government and remaining half will come from the Department of Health.

This came as the provincial legislative body through the committee on health approved a measue granting the allowance as gesture of paying back their sacrifices in carrying out the health programs of Governor Lilia Pineda.

Some P4.5-million had been allocated to ensure the provision of the same.

Members of community health teams – led by midwives and composed of barangay health workers, barangay nutrition scholars, parent-leaders, and sangguniang kabataan member – will each receive a monthly allowance worth P250 for the period of June to December of 2013.

Meanwhile, on the part of the Department of Health (DOH) , Center for Health Development (CHD) Director Leonita Gorgolon also disclosed that President Benigno Aquino III also granted the same amount for the barangay health workers's allowance.

This is recognition by the national government on the contribution of the community health workers in achieving the millenium development goal.

These health workers are tasked to look  pregnant women needing assistance and to refer such cases to respective birthing stations or rural health unit.

They were also asked  to monitor patients under the Tuberculosis Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (TB DOTS); and to assist in the establishment of the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-PR) Identification System.
